It’s not every Sunday morning that I drag myself out of bed at sunrise. But I did it with a smile. I knew I’d be taking in the amazing views of Hobsonville Point’s coastal walkway, however, it weren’t just about the walk and views…. it’s about WHO I got to do this with!

I joined the West Auckland puppy raisers for their Sunday Hobsonville Point walk.

My words can’t describe the smile on my face or the excitement in my heart of spending the morning with the most lovable and well mannered labs. I love dogs! But this walk was extra special - I mean, my business is named after my first love and the one who made me fall in love with photography (YELLOW LAB PHOTOGRAPHY). Read my story here if you’d like.

These four legged friends are seriously just so amazing, the best brown eyes, happiest waggy tails, gentle souls. I’d cup all their heads in my palms, stroke their ears and say I love you to each and everyone of them even though we’ve just met.

We walked from Catalina Bay, to the fenced off, off lead dog park at Bomb Point, and then to 160 Hobsonville Point Cafe. I’ve been to this cafe for a coffee a few times before, but was blown away by my experience on Sunday. They had made a large table for everyone to sit at (we were probably around 30 people) outside, covered in umbrellas with water for the thirsty doggies and ready to take our coffee orders.

I highly recommend their eggs benedict with smoked salmon, but must say, the french toast with fresh fruit and syrup looked absolutely delish. Next time I’m looking for a spot to brunch in my local area, I’d definitely pop in here.

I got to brunch with the most lovely group of people while the doggies slept at our feet.

Once brunch was done, some of the labs put on their work coats. What was so amazing, was that I could see a clear mental shift in their mindset. They weren’t just ‘dogs’ now. They were working. On a mission and meant serious business.

We carried on our walk of the rest of the coastal walkway. Chatted about dogs who were retired, withdrawn from the programme and in training. All with their own uniques stories and personalities. I got so many pats in. All my steps AND my doggie fix in. Thanks so much for having me! Where do I sign up to walk with you guys again?

I’d always wondered when you see a guide dog, whether it’s ok to say hi. My kids and I love to meet new dogs and give them a friendly pat. But I’ve finally asked, when you see a guide dog, and the answer is, it’s best not to say hi. If they’re wearing their red coat, they’re working and can’t have unnecessary distractions.
