One of the most common questions I get before a photoshoot is: “What should we wear?” And trust me, what you wear can make a big difference in how your final portraits look! So, here are some of my favorite outfit ideas from recent dog and family photoshoots—real clients, real style, and lots of inspiration.
1. Keep It Comfortable & Flattering
Wear something that fits well and makes you feel good! A photoshoot is not the time to test out an outfit you’ve never worn before. Confidence always looks best on camera.
2. Light Neutrals Are a Safe Bet
Neutrals like tan, light brown, khaki, and soft denim work beautifully. They create a timeless, natural look that blends well with most home decor. If you're going for a light and airy vibe, neutrals are the way to go!
💡 Tip: Avoid white tees and jeans on everyone—it can look too much like a '90s family shoot! Instead, mix up the denim shades and swap in tan cargo pants or a different style of shirt.
3. Adding Color? Be Intentional
If you love color, use it! But choose shades that complement your home since your photos will (hopefully!) be on your walls for years to come. Small, delicate prints work well, but avoid bold patterns or bright red, as they can dominate the image instead of enhancing it.
4. Black? Maybe Swap for Navy or Dark Grey
If you love dark colors, try navy or dark grey instead of black. Especially if you have a black dog, wearing black can make it hard to differentiate between you and your pup in the photos. The reason Trent’s photo with his black rescue dog Blu worked? His black jacket has a shiny texture, making it easier to see both subjects separately.
5. Coordinate, But Don't Match
Your family outfits should go together, not be matchy-matchy. One of my favorite tricks? Let your dog’s coat color guide your outfit choices! It’s always cute when Dalmatian owners show up in polka dots. 😆
6. Shoes? Don’t Overthink It
Wear shoes that you love and reflect your personality! But don’t stress—most of the time, they won’t even be in the frame.
7. What About the Kids?
Think classic and timeless—rompers, onesies, button-up shirts, or dresses work well. Skip printed tees with logos or big graphics.
If you’re unsure, bring a couple of outfit options to your shoot, and I’ll help you choose!
8. What Does My Dog Wear?
I prefer to photograph dogs “naked”—no collars, no harnesses. I know some pups have adorable outfits, and I’m happy to take a few shots with them, but in most cases, your dog’s natural features should be the star! If we’re shooting outdoors, bring their fancy collar and lead (and take off the council tag for the shoot).
