Kate, Justin and I became dog friends before they knew that I’m a dog and family photographer. Their doggy Oscar was a new little pup in the neighbourhood at the same time as my little Max’s. The doggies are always so excited to see each other and love to play and keep us on our toes cause they always get their leashes tangled up. Silly boys.
Oscar goes for numerous walks during the day and over time, have figured out where Max lives, so at times he’ll walk straight to Max’s house. The boys catch up with a play every few days, and more often when it’s raining. They love to play the upside down face biting game and you hear the little chomps chomps of little teeth pressing against another when they’re pretend biting.
Because Max and Oscar is such good friends, Max visited day care on the day of their photoshoot. They played and said ‘hi’ after the shoot, so it was a really successful time in my studio & the buddies didn’t miss out a play session.
At the time of their portrait photoshoot in Hobsonville Point, their puppy Oscar is about 9 months , so it’s a great time to document their doggy as a playful pup. Kate mentioned to me she would love to do annual photos. So the next time Oscar is in front of my lens, he’ll have grown a bit more and filled out a bit. His colour will possibly change too.
Kate treated herself to hair and makeup being professionally done (it’s a treat my clients LOVE) while I made some of Oscar’s individual portraits and some of Justin and Oscar on their own. They showed off all the tricks Oscar does. He’s such a smart boy who knows exactly what he needs to do to please his humans & get the treaties.
Once Kate’s hair and makeup was done (Seb Makeup) we figured out which outfits to have with which backdrop / scene change, I photographed Kate and Oscar together, some special couple portraits of Kate and Justin on their own, and a few different varieties of the three of them together, different family portraits.
Usually, on a Yellow Lab photoshoot we go for a walk in the neighbourhood (after the studio type photos have been made) to make natural light portraits that are more relaxed and less posed. As they live in Hobsonville Point, we made a stunning portrait of them on the steps in front of their home, and others that show off the area they live in and their favourite spots along the coastal walkway. Their A1 artmount they chose for the wall is one of a family portrait against the Greenhithe bridge. Something that will be special to them for many years.

The photoshoot was so fun! I always try make my photoshoots fun, easy, relaxed, because if you feel at ease with the photographer, it shows in your photographs. We spend the morning chatting and fussing over your dog whether your photoshoot is the first time we meet, or if we know each other, well or from insta. I want you to love your photos, so I work with you in the direction, colour, poses, lack of poses, natural interaction to make for you with my expert guidance.
