A guest blog with Niki Adlington from Wilde Beauty: Why Yellow Lab photography offers a Hair and Makeup service for photoshoots
Getting ready for a photoshoot can be daunting, just to get to the photoshoot location/ studio on time with the right things plus pooch and sometimes kids/ family and then to think of still doing your own hair and makeup on the morning AND not look frazzled by the time you get there... there is just never enough time.
A lot of families go 8 to 10 years between professional portrait sessions... and we all know that is not ideal. As a photographer offering hair and makeup to my clients helps to take pressure off and it's one less thing for mom/ dogmom to worry about. Hair and makeup just before your photo shoot, relaxes you, you're not rushed right in front of the camera as soon as you step in the door. Your natural beauty is enhanced, so we still want you to look like you when you see your photographs, but you'll look like the best version of yourself when you see them.
Ladies have their hair and makeup done right before they join the spotlight in the photoshoot with their beloved dog, moms and daughters like to be made up and their special bond made portraits of. Mum likes to feel amazing in the family portrait too.
I want to introduce you to Niki Adlington, one of the amazing hair and makeup artists I work with in Auckland.
Hi, Niki here and I'm a freelance hair and makeup artist, as well as stylist in Auckland NZ. Specialising in using clean and natural cosmetic products that are Nourishing, Toxin Free, and Beneficial for yourself and the planet. It’s my mission and passion to help you express your natural beauty, boost your confidence and enhance your already amazing features.
What does natural beauty mean to me?
Natural beauty encompasses many different factors, but in short and sweet context: its connecting your mind with your body and creating a beautiful life for yourself inside and out. Being a believer in quality over quantity and less is more, natural beauty begins with nourishing yourself on the inside to radiate on the outside.
Whether it’s a smokey eye, bright lippy, not sure where to start… I’m here to help you achieve the desired look that will suit you best! We get to spend an hour prepping the skin, choosing a look you would like to have for the photos, and styling your hair.
Why get your makeup and hair done?
It is a huge relief for yourself, plus having this done professionally means I can enhance your features in the right places to give you dimension and shine. Knowing where to create shadow and light helps define your face, giving you a clean polished appearance. Skin can come across as lackluster if left unattended, so the products I use will bring your look to life in the photographs. Final touches of blush and a lippy to match your clothing will tie everything together to suit your style. Plus you get to sit back and relax, it really is a pamper session to help you unwind and take the stress off having to get ready yourself.
I look forward to meeting you and creating a beautiful fun look for your photo shoot.
Thank you for featuring on the Yellow Lab Photography blog Niki!
It’s so important to understand that we don’t change the way you look, but help you look your best by enhancing your features and showing your natural beauty. We want you to look like yourself so your recognise yourself when you see your photographs. It’s your photographs, and we want YOU to love them.
Besides hearing it from the professionals, I've asked a few clients what it was like to have their hair and makeup done just before their family photoshoot or before they joined their doggo in a photo session. Most say
They say it helped them relax
Made them feel good
Made them feel more confident knowing they looked perfect
Was a nice treat
Made the photographs look like the best they've seen themselves

Tell me in the comments, have you EVER had your hair and makeup professionally done?
Whether you're having a new headshot, corporate profile made, having your portrait taken with your dog or family, professional hair and makeup on the day is a good idea. Unless of course you're super confident with your own makeup brushes and love to style your (perhaps short) hair yourself.
