A behind the scenes tale of a dog photoshoot and things not going to plan.

I love to photograph dogs in flowers…….

Monique loves the flower dog series too, so she really wanted a photo of her fur baby Zephyr in one.

Except, he doesn’t like playing dress up and having things going over his head.

He’s ok with his collar being put on him…. so M was holding the collar and I had a treat on the other side of the collar, trying to get him to put his head through it himself, but still I could tell Z was uncomfortable.

We were shooting at my Hobsonville Point studio space, so I had all my tools on hand. I took the wreath asked my models to take a few minutes to relax. I cut open the back of the flower wreath and attached it to Z’s collar with some sticky tape. When we went to put it on Z’s collar (with flowers attached) he was happy as!?

I LOVE working with dogs! It is so special that we get to make beautiful portraits and artwork together. But I always want to make sure my subjects are comfortable. Working with animals (and sometimes kids) throws us a curveball, but with some creative thinking, patience, kindness and love, we can create beautiful photographs that will be treasured for a long time.

These are just a few of my favs from Zephyr’s photo session:

Do you have a doggy who is difficult to photograph? I’ve worked with a doggy who is afraid of slippery floors, dogs that have a serious camera face when they see a camera and also dogs who don’t like strangers. Leave me a comment - I love to hear from people who have read my blog!

I’m dog photographer YELLOW LAB and I get my doggy fix by photographing dogs with their families in the Auckland (North Shore, Orewa, Albany and more) area.
